Detailed Grading Scale

HCPSS uses a simplified grading scale without plus/minus grades for GPA calculation. All grades within a letter range (e.g., B+, B, B-) receive the same quality points.

How It Works

This calculator follows the HCPSS grading policy. Your unweighted GPA is calculated on a 4.0 scale, where an A is 4.0, a B is 3.0, and so on. Your weighted GPA adds extra points for more advanced courses: +0.5 for Honors and Gifted & Talented (GT) courses, and +1.0 for Advanced Placement (AP) and International Baccalaureate (IB) courses.

Inputs Explained

  • Course Name: An optional name to help you keep track of your classes.
  • Final Grade (%): Your final percentage grade for the course.
  • Course Level: The academic level of the course, which determines if your GPA receives a weighted boost.

Example

A student takes three courses:

  1. English 11 (Regular): Final Grade 92% → Letter A → 4.0 unweighted points.
  2. GT Algebra II (Honors): Final Grade 88% → Letter B → 3.0 unweighted points + 0.5 weight = 3.5 weighted points.
  3. AP World History (AP): Final Grade 85% → Letter B → 3.0 unweighted points + 1.0 weight = 4.0 weighted points.
  • Unweighted GPA: (4.0 + 3.0 + 3.0) / 3 = 3.33
  • Weighted GPA: (4.0 + 3.5 + 4.0) / 3 = 3.83

Tips & Notes

  • The weighted GPA is often what colleges look at, as it reflects the rigor of your coursework.
  • Always double-check your final grades with your official report card or HCPSS's online portal.
  • Grading policies can be updated. This calculator is based on the most current publicly available HCPSS information.

FAQs

HCPSS uses a standard scale where an A is 90-100%, a B is 80-89%, a C is 70-79%, a D is 60-69%, and an F is below 60%.

Weighted GPA adds extra quality points for advanced courses. Honors/GT courses receive an additional 0.5 points, and AP/IB courses receive an additional 1.0 point, which are then factored into the overall GPA calculation.

A weighted GPA above 4.0 is excellent and indicates success in advanced-level courses. Aiming for a weighted GPA of 3.5 or higher is a strong goal for college admissions.

For GPA calculation purposes, HCPSS uses a simplified scale without plus/minus grades. A B+ and a B- are both calculated as a B (3.0 quality points).
