How it works

Your GPA at the University of Kentucky is calculated by dividing the total number of quality points you've earned by the total number of credit hours you've attempted. Each letter grade has a corresponding quality point value (e.g., an 'A' is 4.0, a 'B+' is 3.3). We multiply the quality points for each course by its credit hours and sum them up to get your GPA.

Formula: GPA = Σ(credits × grade_points) / Σ(credits)

Example: If you have 15 credit hours total and your weighted points sum to 53.25, your GPA = 53.25 / 15 = 3.55.

Inputs explained

  • Course Name: An optional field to help you keep track of your entries.
  • Grade: Select the letter grade you received for the course. The calculator uses the official UKY scale, where an 'E' is a failing grade.
  • Credit Hours: The number of credits the course is worth. This can be found on your schedule or transcript.

Example

Sample calculation:

Let's say you took a 3-credit hour Chemistry course and got a 'B+' (3.3 points) and a 4-credit History course and got an 'A-' (3.7 points). Your total quality points would be (3.3 × 3) + (3.7 × 4) = 9.9 + 14.8 = 24.7. Your total credit hours are 3 + 4 = 7. Your GPA would be 24.7 / 7 = 3.53.

Course Credits Grade Points Weighted
Chemistry 3 B+ (3.3) 3.3 3×3.3 = 9.9
History 4 A- (3.7) 3.7 4×3.7 = 14.8
Total 7 24.7

GPA = 24.7 / 7 = 3.53

  • Use the "Calculate Target GPA" feature in the advanced options to plan what grades you need in a future semester.
  • The University of Kentucky uses a 4.0 scale with plus/minus grading. An 'E' grade represents a failing grade (0.0 points).
