Customize scoring curves per subtest. Default power map uses p = 1.10 for Reading/Writing, p = 1.05 for Math.

Power Exponents (p)

How it works

We convert your raw correct answers into PSAT test scores (8–38 for PSAT/NMSQT/PSAT 10, or 6–36 for PSAT 8/9) using an adjustable mapping. EBRW = (Reading + Writing) × 10. Math = test score × 20. Total = EBRW + Math (320–1520 for PSAT/NMSQT/PSAT 10, or 240–1440 for PSAT 8/9). Because PSAT uses equating, every test form has a unique curve—our mapping is an approximation you can tweak.

Inputs explained

  • Reading/Writing: Raw correct out of 47/44 (or enter wrong/blank instead)
  • Math: Raw correct out of 17 (No‑Calc) and 31 (Calc) → 48 total
  • Advanced curve: Choose power map (p) or 5 anchors per subtest; optional PSAT 8/9 variant (different bounds)

Example

Example raw scores:

  • Reading: 33/47
  • Writing: 32/44
  • Math No‑Calc: 12/17
  • Math Calc: 25/31 (Math total: 37/48)

Using default power map:

  • Reading test ≈ 8 + 30×(33/47)1.1028
  • Writing test ≈ 8 + 30×(32/44)1.1029
  • EBRW = (28 + 29)×10 = 570
  • Math test ≈ 8 + 30×(37/48)1.0529 → Math = 29×20 = 580
  • Total ≈ 1150

Selection Index (PSAT/NMSQT): 2×(28+29+29) = 172 (approx)

Tips & notes

  • Curves differ by form. If you know your practice test's curve, enter anchors in Advanced for closer estimates.
  • Build subtest strength: a few raw points near the top can shift test scores more than expected.
  • For National Merit, your official selection index is based on College Board reporting; this tool gives an approximate value only.

FAQs

It's an approximation. PSAT uses equating with unique curves per form. Use this for planning, not as an official score predictor.

Yes. In Advanced, adjust the power exponent p or enter custom anchor mappings for each subtest.

No. There's no penalty for wrong responses; unanswered questions simply don't add points.

For PSAT/NMSQT, Selection Index ≈ 2 × (Reading test + Writing test + Math test). Our number is an estimate only.

No. This is an independent tool for practice and study planning.
