Understanding BMI and Pregnancy Weight Gain
Your pre-pregnancy Body Mass Index (BMI) helps healthcare providers determine a healthy weight gain goal for your pregnancy. Gaining the right amount of weight supports your baby's growth and reduces health risks for both of you. The recommendations are a general guide, as every pregnancy is unique.
Example
A person who is 5'5" (165 cm) and had a pre-pregnancy weight of 140 lbs (63.5 kg):
- Pre-pregnancy BMI: 23.3 (Normal Weight)
- Recommended Total Weight Gain: 25 - 35 lbs (11.3 - 15.9 kg)
- At 25 weeks, a weight gain of around 15 lbs would be within the recommended range.
Tips & Important Notes
- Consult Your Doctor: Always discuss your weight gain and nutritional needs with your doctor or midwife.
- Focus on Nutrition: Weight gain comes from the baby, placenta, increased blood volume, and stored fat. Focus on a balanced diet rather than just the number on the scale.
- Every Woman is Different: These are guidelines. Your individual weight gain pattern may vary.
